Two Sides

On the upside, I'm submitting work again and digging out half finished work to firm up for more submissions.

On the downside, I came across a document that just reads:

Balikbayan Bag - Story thing

Which sounds really intriquing, but derned if I can remember what the story was about. *repeated head banging on the wall*

Heterosis

I /highly/ recommend the short film Lilo and Me by Kip Fulbeck (Thank you Ver!

Multiracial/multicultural moves beyond just race relations between diverse but distinct groups, into the bodies of our children, and even as I struggle with being FilAm and the mental and spiritual bending it creates in my sense of Self, I can only imagine that struggle amplified by the Beingness that is Body.

What I appreciate though about this movie is that it makes the move from angst to self-containment/self-understanding. It tells a story of growth in the face of missing and ignored definitions of self.

This also is the space that will be explored and expressed in the next century, God willing that we exist as a species that long. The question is, how willing are we as artists now, even in our struggle to understand ourselves and express our worldview, to mentor those that are rapidly coming after us, and who we hope will outshine us and bring about the changes and peace we can only dream of or lament for its lack of being?

QOTD

Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.

-George Bernard Shaw

Resolution: Attaining a sense of self-assurance/containment.

Easter Bunny Truth

Our four-year-old revealed the truth about the Easter Bunny this weekend...

A: There's no such thing as the Easter Bunny.
Hubby (horrified): Oh?
A: No, the Easter Bunny is really Jennifer's mom.
Me: Who told you that?
A: Jennifer.

The next day, when A woke to find a basket of goodies and an easter egg hunt laid out in my parent's basement...

A: Jennifer's mom came to Lola's house! She brought us baskets and eggs!
Hubby: Do you think she came in her bunny costume?
A (very seriously): Yes. Yes, she did.

So there you have it. Jennifer's mom is the Easter Bunny.

From Watch to Wake

I have held watch with Eileen as she moved through the last days of her father. Her unflinching poet's eye both gripped and awed me to silence. Her courageous vulnerability beyond inspiring. For her and her family I offer:

In Memoriam

Released
from pain
soaked boney flesh,

poet's
heartwings thrum
soul's journey song.

Serenity
births words,
heals wounds, returning

child
to father
charm's memory secure.
